The Australian Government has introduced a temporary change to the overseas student transfer restriction period.
From 2 October 2026, overseas students who wish to transfer to another education provider must complete at least 12 months of their principal course of study before transferring, unless an exception applies.
Previously, the transfer restriction period was 6 months.
This is a temporary measure and will apply until 30 June 2027. From 1 July 2027, the transfer restriction period will return to 6 months.
What is the Principal Course of Study?
The principal course of study is the main course a student is undertaking where their student visa has been issued for multiple courses of study.
In most cases, the principal course is the final course of study covered by the student visa.
What Does This Mean for Students?
Students considering transferring to another education provider should be aware of the new 12-month restriction period and check how the requirements apply to their individual circumstances before making any changes to their enrolment.
Some exceptions may apply under the overseas student transfer requirements.
