English ( High School Preparation)

The General English (High School Preparation) is designed for students aiming to build a solid foundation in English, with a specific focus on senior high school preparation. The students will develop the essential language skills required for both everyday communication and academic success. Through face-to-face teaching, interactive lessons, and practical exercises, students will enhance their proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The curriculum emphasises vocabulary development, grammatical accuracy, and clear pronunciation, enabling students to participate confidently in social and educational settings. Additionally, supervised self-access study and focused preparation equip students with the necessary skills to successfully transition into Australian senior high schools and continue their academic studies.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

English language: Beginner or IELTS equivalent 3.5

Age: Students must be between 16 and 18 years of age

Academic: Completion of Year 10 or an equivalent

COURSE DURATION

The course is delivered over 30 hours per week for 20 weeks.

Monday to Friday

8:30am – 10:00am (Session 1)
10:00am – 10:30am (Break)
10:30am – 12:30pm (Session 2)
12:30pm – 1:00pm (Break)
1:00pm – 3:30pm (Session 3)

Teaching Methodology

The course places strong emphasis on developing academic language skills through interactive and task-based learning. Lessons are structured around high school themes and academic subjects, fostering critical thinking, effective communication, and literacy skills. Students participate in group discussions, presentations, and projects designed to build confidence and fluency in academic English.

Course Delivery and Assessment Methods

A placement test is conducted on the first day, with weekly tests conducted throughout the course. Students receive detailed feedback on their progress on a fortnightly basis. The types of assessments include multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank questions, writing of various types of texts, short answer questions and paired interviews. Our assessment system enables us to give students targeted remedial help for identified weaknesses.

Resources and Facilities

We offer modern facilities, including audio-visual equipment and internet access. Being in the centre of Sydney CBD, we are very well served by public transport and are close to public libraries. The student lounge is well equipped (microwave ovens, vending machines, computers with internet access, etc.)

Welfare and Guidance Services

Counselling services are available to assist students on education issues as well as matters concerning adjustment to life in Australia. We have policies and procedures in place to assist students with special and individual needs or with learning difficulties.

Pathway

Students successfully completing this course will meet the Academy of English Intermediate English level, equivalent to IELTS 5.0, required for enrolment at the Australian International High School for year 11 and 12.

Australian International High School (AIHS)

Australian International High School (CRICOS 02401M) is registered by the New South Wales Board of Studies to offer year 11 and 12 to international and local students. The school is accredited to present candidates for the Higher School Certificate (HSC).
